The Channel Crafters
The One Stop Guide For Everyone Who Wants a New Logo
A logo is very important for YouTube channels. They help establish your brand, and represent your channel 24/7, so it makes sense for it to be well designed, and well thought out. However, when it comes to getting a new logo, it is easy to get caught up and overwhelmed in the whole design process, and get stuck coming up with any ideas for what you want. That is why, we have put together an easy to follow guide with some things to keep in mind as you brainstorm ideas and inspiration going forward into the design process.
Choosing a Logo Type
This is the first thing you want to think about because it is a very defining factor in the way your end product will look, and has a lot of meaning in what your logo says to everyone who sees it.
There are 4 main types of logos; lettermark, Symbol, combo, and emblem. Each have their own advantages, and some will work better with your channel than others.
Lettermark logos are any logos that are derived out of text or numbers. It could be your full channel name, initials, or short form.
– Helps your channel name be remembered
– Very versatile (looks good on a screen, t-shirt, animation etc.)
– Simple yet stylized look
– Available at a price discount
Symbol logos are any logos that are based off an image. It can be an abstract symbol, or something that represents your channel.
– Can have a symbolic meaning. For example, a mountain can represent you are from Colorado.
– Can trigger your channel name when viewed. For example, if your channel has something to do with a bird, your symbol could be a bird
– They draw viewers interest
Combo logos are any logos that use a combination of type, and images.
– Helps your viewers know your name
– Also gives your viewers an image to visually remember you by
– Image and type can be separated and still be effective
Note: Sometimes with combo logos, things can end up looking too busy and cramped. Simplicity is best!
Emblem logos are classic logos that have words and symbols surrounded by a shape. They are like a badge.
-Shows viewers your name, as well as an image in one design to help you be remembered
– Very versatile
– A classic look
Note: Similar to combo logos, emblem logos, things can end up looking too busy and cramped. Simplicity is best!
What Makes a Good Logo
Now that you have chosen your logo type, it is now time to brainstrom ideas for what you are looking for. However, before that, you should know what makes a good logo.
A good logo has meaning behind it. Whether it is an obvious meaning, or a minor detail, you want your design to represent something. For example, if you have a comedy channel, and want a lettermark logo, a good idea might be to make the lettering a bright color that represents joy. For example, yellow.
This one is important, but often times forgotten about. Before Getting a new logo, you should stop and think about what your logo will be used for. Is it just going to be shown in videos, or are you going to be putting it on packaging and products, or maybe even a building. Even if you are a small channel, you never know when you might grow and expand. The last thing you want is a newly designed logo, and the a few months later, you figure out it doesn’t come out well on T-shirts because there are too many colors incorporated.
Know Your Brand
In order to have a good logo, you must know your brand. You do not want your logo and brand conflicting. For example if you have a channel that discusses world news in a serious tone, you do not want a goofy logo because your viewers will not take you as serious. Often times your brand will play a big part in what direction you go with your logo.
A logo like this would not work well with a more serious channel because it is a goofy and “cartoony” type of logo.
Simplicity is key when it comes to logo design. You want to be able to clearly see the logo and understand what it is, even if it is from a distance. Take a look a some of the biggest brands in the world, and you will see how they try to keep things simple, often times even simplifying it down as time goes on. The more simple a logo is, the greater the chance it will stand the test of time; which is exactly what you want.
Notice how this logo is of a man, but it is a very simplified design of a man, so even when it is seen from a distance, it still looks good.
Creativity is king when it comes to a good logo. While we did say to keep things simple, that does not mean to keep things boring. You want your logo to be creative enough to stick in people’s mind. If you have an “ole run of the mill” logo with no creativity, it will never catch anyone’s attention, which defeats the whole purpose of having a logo.
